Pastoral Care

At Breakwater Academy, we want all our children to feel happy, safe and successful. We believe that good pastoral support focuses on meeting the individual needs of each child. We aim to build trusting and collaborative relationships with all our pupils and their families.

Our pastoral team includes a pastoral leader and three learning mentors. Alongside senior leaders and class teachers, they provide support and resources to enable children to engage positively in learning and all aspects of school life.

All our staff model to pupils how to look after themselves and others, encouraging them to seek help, support or advice whenever they need it.

Pastoral care underpins personal development and we know from experience that with outstanding pastoral care, students feel they belong and their self-esteem is able to flourish because they feel valued and cared for.

Supporting the pastoral needs of pupils sometimes involves working with external agencies. In these situations, we ensure that a confidential, professional, non-judgemental and sensitive service is provided.

Breakwater Academy’s pastoral support includes:
  • a range of academic interventions organised by the SENDCo
  • worry buster groups led by the Mental Health Support Practitioner and / or Learning Mentors
  • external agencies such as, Children’s Services, police, health professionals, Education Welfare Service, doctors and nurses
  • learning mentors
  • speech and language support
  • lunch clubs for children who prefer a quieter space
  • breakfast and after school clubs
  • outdoor learning
  • Sensory Circuits
  • Jump Ahead
