At Breakwater Academy, linguistics phonics is taught using the Sounds-Write phonics programme.

Linguistic phonics teaches pupils to understand the relationship between written language and spoken words. Understanding the relationship between sounds and the spellings that represent them enables pupils to develop their reading and writing skills.

These skills support pupils in learning to separate words into sounds (segmenting), putting sounds together (blending) and swapping sounds in and out of words (manipulating), thus developing accuracy in reading and spelling.

At Breakwater Academy, phonics begins in Reception and continues to Year 6. In addition to daily reading lessons, all pupils have explicit phonics lessons. Throughout KS2, pupils study the origins of words, which enables them to discover the meaning of new words, and supports their comprehension of written texts across the curriculum.

Phonic interventions are carried out throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2 to support all children in preparing for the next key stage or secondary school.
