At Breakwater Academy, we take a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics.
The fundamental principle is that all children can be successful at mathematics when given high quality instruction and meaningful support. Children progress through learning at broadly the same pace, with same day interventions being used as a vital tool to ensure all children succeed. We want to ensure that all children have a solid understanding of the subject, demonstrating and articulating their understanding of mathematical concepts. This understanding is supported through ensuring that pupils learn key facts such as times tables and number bonds to a level of automaticity, allowing them to learn new concepts and make links to previous learning more securely.
