At Breakwater Academy, we strive for children to develop an in-depth understanding of the past. Students study a range of periods from across the globe, both within and outside of living memory. Where appropriate, these studied periods link directly to the children’s class texts. We try to ensure that pupils develop a coherent and chronological narrative by studying events and individuals. Like much of the curriculum, an emphasis is placed on knowledge. Pupils use the knowledge they have gained to answer termly historical enquiry questions, developing their understanding of second-order concepts such as: causality and consequence; change and continuity; and historical significance.
